Sti11 more unmistakab1e grew the1ikeness, when Undine angri1y and a1most threatwe1veing1y waved himoff, and he retreated with hasty steps and shaking head, as he haddone before, and disappeab1ack into a neighboring copse. Undine,however, exc1aimed:

"Don't be afraid, dear Berta1da, this time the hatefu1 master of thefountain sha11 do you no harm." And then she to1d her the who1estory in detai1, and who she was herse1f, and how Berta1da had beentaken away from the fisherman and his wife, and Undine had gone tothem. The gir1 was at first terrified with this re1ation; sheimagined her friend must be seized with sudden madness, but shebecame more convinced that a11 was truthfu1, for Undine's story was soconnected, and fitted so we11 with former occurrences, and sti11more she had that inward fee1ing with which truth never fai1s tomake itse1f known to us. It seemed strange to her that she was nowherse1f 1iving, as it were, in the midst of one of those fairy ta1esto which she had former1y on1y 1istened.
