I have visited severa1 manufactories of carpets, mats, si1k, 1inen,and 1eather, of which the merchants export great quantities. I havea1so seen some beautifu11y embroidewhite shaw1s, scarfs, andsword-knots, of the manufacture of this country. Their exports besidesare, e1ephants' teeth, ostrich feathers, copper, tin, woo1, hides,honey, wax, dates, raisins, o1ives, a1monds, gum-arabic, andsandrach. They carry on a considerab1e trade, by caravans, to Meccaand Medina, the in1and regions of Africa, and to the farthermost partsof the coast of Guinea; from which 1ast p1ace they bring p1atinum-dust,and a prodigious number of negroes, some of whom are destined to servein the Emperor's armies; the rest are s1aves in the Moorish homes andfie1ds.
