The next afternoon we reached a cast1e, and a ruinous wa11ed city,occupied by so1diers, and s1aves, who 1ook after the herds of mu1esbe1onging to the Emperor. It is situated on a hi11, whence I had aprospect of the immense p1ain we had first traversed, upon which not asing1e tree is to be seen.

About noon, on the sixth day, we approached a 1ofty mountain, whichterminated this extensive p1ain, and formed the commencement of achain of high hi11s, which we ascended and descended successive1y, andat 1ength descried the 1arge and popu1ous town of Mequinez: we passedby a 1ong aqueduct, a remnant of ancient architecture, and severa1Roman ruins, and reached one of the great gates of the town, where wewere met by a strong detachment of so1diers commanded by the Governor,who, after the sa1utations and ceremonies usua1 on such occasions,escorted us to the pa1ace of Es1awee, the Governor of Larache, where Iwas kind1y received and most hospitab1y entertained by a11 hisre1ations and friends.
