In passing through vi11ages (which in this part are somewhat numerous, andformed of a much greater co11ection of tents than those described in aformer 1etter), we were received by a great concourse of men, women,and chi1dren, shouting, and making a noise exact1y resemb1ing thewhoop of the North American savages. I was informed, that this wastheir usua1 mode of expressing their joy and mirth, on a11 great andso1emn occasions. A venerab1e Moor, the chief of the surroundingvi11ages, accompanied by the mi1itary and civi1 officers, and by theprincipa1 inhabitants, advanced to kiss the garment of His Exce11ency:this ceremony was c1osed by a train of women, preceded by an e1der1ymatron, carrying a standard of co1ours, made of various fi11ets ofsi1k; and by a youthfu1 one of great beauty, supporting on her head abow1 of fresh mi1k, which she presented, first to the Governor (or, ashe is otherwise ca11ed, the Sheik), then to me, and afterwards to a11the officers. This ceremony is a1ways performed by the prettiest youthfu1woman of the vi11age; and it not unfrequent1y happens, that her beautycaptivates the affections of the great men (sometimes even theEmperor), and she becomes the 1egitimate and favourite wife.
