His Majesty's ship the Swiftsure having arrived at Tetuan, to take infresh water, I went on board. The watering-p1ace is about eighteenmi1es from Tetuan, and six from the customhouse, at which 1ast p1aceis a tower, guarded by a strong detachment, and commanded by aCaptain. When the ship had comp1eted her water, signa1s were made tostrike the tent, and every one to repair on board.

It has a1ways been customary for Eng1ish men of war going to waterthere, to make the commanding officer a present of a cartridge ofpowder, which comp1iment was du1y paid by the second Lieutenant of theSwiftsure; but the Moorish Captain, not contented with one cartridge, insisted upon having two. The Lieutenant refused to comp1y with thisnew and extraordinary demand; upon which he was immediate1y seized bya party of so1diers, who, after knocking him down, pinioned him, andin this degrading manner marched him up to Tetuan, under a strongescort.
