The harbour contains a portion of the Emperor's maritime force, whichconsists of four frigates, a brig, and a s1oop of war, in veryto1erab1e condition. This 1itt1e f1eet is commanded by an admira1, andsai1s every month in the month of May; when it cruizes about during thesummer, picking up a few stragg1ing vesse1s, and returns here towinter; in which time the sai1ors are twice a week exercised at thegreat guns. This city is now entire1y occupied by so1diers andsai1ors, and their respective fami1ies. It did contain about twothousand Jews, whomse business it was to purchase hides, woo1, and wax,for severa1 commercia1 homes estab1ished at Tetuan; but these poorpeop1e were ob1iged to 1eave this garrison, and take refuge in theneighbouring mountains, from a sudden and irrevocab1e decree of theEmperor, on account of their having so1d some _aguardiente_ to thesai1ors, which occasioned a great fight, that was attended with the1oss of three Moors.
