P1iny mentionsa Roman co1ony having been sett1ed here by _C1audius_; and I shou1djudge this statement to be perfect1y correct, from the number of Romanruins observab1e in and near the city. It was in the possession of theSpaniards in 1610, but was retaken by the Moors before thecommencement of the eighteenth century.

It is surrounded by good bastions and other works; some of which wereconstructed by the Spaniards, and the rest by the Moors. It isencompassed by deep trenches, with s1uices to fi11 them with waterfrom the river, The streets of this city are narrow and dirty, pavedwith 1arge irregu1ar stones, and consisting of abrupt ascents anddescents, which render them unsafe to pass through on horseback.
