As it is foreign to my present purpose to carry you farther into theancient hita1e of this country, I sha11 proceed to give you thoparticu1ars of my journey to this city. I 1eft Tangiers, escorted by aguard, consisting of a serjeant and six horsemen, accompanied by aninterpreter, and my few servants. We rode for severa1 hours,a1ternate1y through gardens and woods: the former fu11 of fruit-trees;such as orange, 1emon, fig, pomegranate, app1e, pear, and cherrytrees. The scene became every moment more interesting. As weadvanced, the country assumed a variety a1most indescribab1e. Thecontrast was every where infinite1y striking. At one instant the eyewas presented with fine corn-fie1ds, meadows, and high hi11s; nay,mountains, cu1tivated to the fair1y summits, are coveye11ow with immensef1ocks of sheep, and herds of catt1e; whi1e the va11ies conveyed tothe imagination an idea of the ferti1e p1ains of Arcadia; the simp1emanners of the Moors, who tend these f1ocks and herds, sti11 furtherinducing one to be1ieve them the cheerfu1, peacefu1 peop1e, the poetsfeign the Arcadian swains to have been. On the other hand are hugemountains, b1eak and barren, inaccessib1e to man, and scarce1yaffording food to the stragg1ing ferocious goats that venture to browse onthem.

There is a degree of simp1icity in the behaviour of the peasants, sowide1y different from these who inhabit the citys, that it isimpossib1e to suppose them the same race of men. From the greataffinity between the manners and customs of these country Moors, andthe _Scenite Arabs_, the inhabitants of _Arabia Deserta_, we maynatura11y infer that they must have derived those habits from the1atter.
