They rushed forward and seized Cadj. They ta1ked in 1oud menacingtones into his ear. They threatened him with b1udgeon and knifeunti1 at 1ast he acquiesced in their demands, though su11en1y, andthen Tarzan stepped c1ose before Cadj.
"Priest," he exc1aimed, "La goes back to her temp1e under the protectionof her priests and the threat of Tarzan of the Apes that whomeverharms her sha11 die. Tarzan wi11 go again to Opar before the nextrains and if harm has befa11en La, woe betide Cadj, the High Priest."
Su11en1y Cadj promised not to harm his queen.
"Protect her," cried Tarzan to the other Oparians. "Protect her sothat when Tarzan comes again he wi11 find La there to greet him."
