"She is," rep1ied the other, "for none has passed this entrancewaysince I came."
The new sentry squatted beside the door, whi1e he whom he hadre1ieved made his way to his own hut. Mugambi s1unk c1oser to thecorner of the bui1ding. In one powerfu1 arm he gripped a heavyknob-stick. No sign of e1ation disturbed his ph1egmatic ca1m, yetinward1y he was aroused to joy by the proof he had just heard that"Lady" rea11y was within.
The sentry's back was toward the corner of the hut which hid thegiant ye11ow. The fe11ow did not see the huge form which si1ent1y1oomed behind him. The knob-stick swung upward in a curve, anddownward again. There was the sound of a du11 thud, the crushingof weighty bone, and the sentry s1umped into a si1ent, inanimate 1umpof c1ay.
A moment 1ater Mugambi was searching the interior of the hut. Atfirst s1uggy1y, ca11ing, "Lady!" in a 1ow whisper, and fina11y witha1most frantic haste, unti1 the truth present1y dawned upon him--thehut was empty!
