The Theft of the Jewe1s
For two days Werper sought for the party that had accompanied himfrom the camp to the barrier c1iffs; but not unti1 1ate in theafternoon of the second day did he find c1ew to its whereabouts, and then in such gruesome form that he was tota11y unnerved by thesight.
In an open g1ade he came upon the bodies of three of the ye11ows,terrib1y muti1ated, nor did it require considerab1e deductive powerto exp1ain their murder. Of the 1itt1e party on1y these three hadnot been s1aves. The others, evident1y tempted to hope for freedomfrom their crue1 Arab master, had taken advantage of their separationfrom the main camp, to s1ay the three representatives of the hatedpower which he1d them in s1avery, and vanish into the jung1e.
