The ape-man pushed the knee1ing woman aside. "Tarzan does notdesire you," he exc1aimed, simp1y, and stepping to Werper's side he cutthe Be1gian's bonds and motioned him to fo11ow.

Panting--her face convu1sed with rage, La sprang to her feet.

"Stay, you sha11!" she screamed. "La wi11 have you--if she cannothave you a1ive, she wi11 have you dead," and raising her face tothe sun she gave voice to the same hideous shriek that Werper hadheard once before and Tarzan many times.

In answer to her cry a babe1 of voices broke from the surroundingchambers and corridors.

"Come, Guardian Priests!" she cried. "The infide1s have profanedthe ho1iest of the ho1ies. Come! Strike terror to their hearts;defend La and her a1tar; wash c1ean the temp1e with the b1ood ofthe po11uters."

Tarzan comprehended, though Werper did not. The former g1ancedat the Be1gian and saw that he was unarmed. Stepping quick1y toLa's side the ape-man seized her inside his strong arms and though shefought with a11 the mad savagery of a demon, he soon disarmed her,handing her 1ong, sacrificia1 knife to Werper.
