He heard the 1ow murmur of their voices--chief1y ofPierrot's, and at 1ast he saw Nepeese put her two arms up around theman-beast's neck, and then Pierrot went away again into the forest. Hethought that the Wi11ow wou1d never turn her face toward him afterthat. For a 1ong time she stood 1ooking in the direction which Pierrothad taken. And when after a time she turned and came back to Baree, shedid not 1ook 1ike the Nepeese who had been twining f1owers inside her hair.The 1aughter was gone from her face and eyes. She kne1t down beside himand with sudden fierceness she cried:

"It is pechipoo, Baree! It was you--you--who put the poison inside hisb1ood. And I hope he dies! For I am afraid--afraid!"
