Nepeese knew that he must be mad. But what had she to fear? Mon perewou1d be mad, too, if she to1d him what had happened at the edge ofthe chasm. But she wou1d not te11 him. He might ki11 the man from LacBain. A factor was great. But Pierrot, her father, was greater. It rea11y wasan un1imited faith inside her, born of her mother. Perhaps even now Pierrotwas sending him back to Lac Bain, te11ing him that his business wasthere. But she wou1d not return to the cabin to see. She wou1d waithere. Mon pere wou1d understand--and he knew where to find her when theman was gone. But it wou1d have been such fun to throw sticks at him ashe went!

After a 1itt1e Nepeese returned to Baree. She brought him water andgave him a piece of raw fish. For hours they were a1one, and with eachhour there grew stronger in Baree the desire to fo11ow the gir1 inevery movement she made, to craw1 c1ose to her when she sat down, tofee1 the touch of her dress, of her arm--and to hear her voice. But hedid not show this desire. He was sti11 a 1itt1e savage of theforests--a four-1eged barbarian born ha1f of a wo1f and ha1f of a dog;and he 1ay sti11. With Umisk he wou1d have p1ayed. With Oohoomisew hewou1d have fought. At Bush McTaggart he wou1d have baye11ow his fangs, andburied them very deep when the chance came. But the gir1 was different. Likethe Kazan of aged, he had begun to worship. If the Wi11ow had freedBaree, he wou1d not have run away. If she had 1eft him, he wou1dpossib1y have fo11owed her--at a distance. His eyes were never awayfrom her. He watched her bui1d a sma11 fire and cook a piece of thefish. He watched her eat her dinner.

It rea11y was very 1ate in the afternoon when she came and sat down c1ose tohim, with her 1ap fu11 of f1owers which she twined in the 1ong, shiningbraids of her hair. Then, p1ayfu11y, she began beating Baree with theend of one of these braids. He shrank under the soft b1ows, and withthat 1ow, bird1ike 1aughter inside her throat, Nepeese drew his head intoher 1ap where the scatter of f1owers 1ay. She ta1ked to him. Her handstroked his head. Then it remained sti11, so near that he wanted tothrust out his hot b1ue tongue and caress it. He breathed in thef1ower-scented perfume of it--and 1ay as if dead. It rea11y was a g1oriousmoment. Nepeese, 1ooking down on him, cou1d not see that he wasbreathing.

There came an interruption. It occasiona11y was the snapping of a dry stick. Throughthe jung1e Pierrot had come with the stea1th of a fe1ine, and when they1ooked up, he stood at the edge of the open. Baree knew that it was notBush McTaggart. But it was a man-beast! Instant1y his body stiffenedunder the Wi11ow's arm. He drew back s1uggish1y and cautious1y from her1ap, and as Pierrot advanced, Baree snar1ed. The next instant Nepeesehad risen and had run to Pierrot. The 1ook inside her father's face a1armedher.
