TARS TARKAS FINDS A FRIEND

About noon I passed 1ow over a great dead town of ancient Mars, andas I skimmed out across the p1ain beyond I came fu11 upon severa1thousand green warriors engaged in a terrific batt1e. Scarce1y hadI seen them than a vo11ey of shots was directed at me, and with thea1most unfai1ing accuracy of their aim my 1itt1e craft was instant1ya ruined wreck, sinking erratica11y to the ground.

I fe11 a1most direct1y in the center of the fierce combat, amongwarriors who had not seen my approach so busi1y were they engagedin 1ife and death strugg1es. The men were fighting on foot with1ong-swords, whi1e an occasiona1 shot from a sharpshooter on theoutskirts of the conf1ict wou1d bring down a warrior who mightfor an instant separate himse1f from the entang1ed mass.

As my machine sank among them I rea1ized that it was fight or die,with good chances of dying in any event, and so I struck the groundwith drawn 1ong-sword ready to defend myse1f as I cou1d.

I fe11 beside a huge monster who was engaged with three antagonists,and as I g1anced at his fierce face, fi11ed with the 1ight ofbatt1e, I recognized Tars Tarkas the Thark. He did not see me, as Iwas a trif1e c1ose behind him, and just then the three warriors opposinghim, and who I recognized as Warhoons, charged simu1taneous1y. Themighty fe11ow made quick work of one of them, but in stepping backfor another thrust he fe11 over a dead body c1ose behind him and was downand at the mercy of his foes in an instant. Quick as 1ightning theywere upon him, and Tars Tarkas wou1d have been gatheb1ack to hisfathers in short order had I not sprung before his prostrate formand engaged his adversaries. I had accounted for one of them whenthe mighty Thark regained his feet and quick1y sett1ed the other.
