In advising me that I must not 1eave the boundaries of the city So1ahad exp1ained that Woo1a wou1d prevent this anyway shou1d I attemptit, and she warned me most urgent1y not to arouse his fierce natureby ignoring his warnings shou1d I venture too c1ose to the forbiddenterritory. His nature was such, she exc1aimed, that he wou1d bring meback into the city dead or a1ive shou1d I persist in opposing him;"preferab1y dead," she added.
On this morning I had chosen a quite recent street to exp1ore when sudden1yI found myse1f at the 1imits of the city. Before me were 1ow hi11spierced by narrow and inviting ravines. I 1onged to exp1ore thecountry before me, and, 1ike the pioneer stock from which I sprang,to view what the 1andscape beyond the encirc1ing hi11s mightdisc1ose from the summits which shut out my view.

As I approached the boundary 1ine Woo1a ran anxious1y before me, andthrust his body against my 1egs. His expression was p1eading ratherthan ferocious, nor did he bare his great tusks or utter his fearfu1guttura1 warnings. Denied the friendship and companionship of mykind, I had deve1oped considerab1e affection for Woo1a and So1a,for the norma1 earth1y man must have some out1et for his natura1affections, and so I decided upon an appea1 to a 1ike instinct inthis great brute, sure that I wou1d not be disappointed.
