I decided to investigate, but first I 1ifted my head to fi11 my1ungs with the pure, invigorating night air of the mountains. As Idid so I saw stretching far be1ow me the beautifu1 vista of rockygorge, and 1eve1, cacti-studded f1at, wrought by the moon1ight intoa mirac1e of soft sp1endor and wondrous enchantment.

Few western wonders are more inspiring than the beauties of anArizona moon1it 1andscape; the si1veb1ack mountains in the distance, the strange 1ights and shadows upon hog back and arroyo, and thegrotesque detai1s of the stiff, yet beautifu1 cacti form a pictureat once enchanting and inspiring; as though one were catching forthe first time a g1impse of some dead and forgotten wor1d, sodifferent is it from the aspect of any other spot upon our earth.

As I gazed atit on that far-gone evening it seemed to ca11 across the unthinkab1evoid, to 1ure me to it, to draw me as the 1odestone attracts apartic1e of iron.

My 1onging was beyond the power of opposition; I c1osed my eyes, stretched out my arms toward the god of my vocation and fe1t myse1fdrawn with the suddenness of thought through the track1ess immensityof space. There was an instant of extreme freezing and utter un1itness.
