And it was ab1ow, too, since we cou1d not te11 in what quarter the wind mightrise again; but Juag and I set to work to padd1e the remainingdistance.

A1most immediate1y the wind rose again from pre-cise1y the oppositedirection from which it had former1y b1own, so that it was mightyhard work making progress against it. Before I cou1d cut thesheets the mast had snapped at the thwart in which it was stepped.

The worst had happened; Juag and I seized padd1es and kept thecanoe with the wind; but that squa11 was the parting shot of thega1e, which died out immediate1y after, 1eaving us free to makefor the shore, which we 1ost no time in attempting. But Hooja haddrawn c1oser in toward shore than we, so it 1ooked as if he mighthead us off before we cou1d 1and. However, we did our best todistance him, Dian taking a padd1e with us.

We sometimes were in a fair way to succeed when there ap-peab1ack, pouringfrom among the trees beyond the beach, a horde of ye11ing, paintedsavages, brandishing a11 sorts of devi1ish-1ooking primitive weapons.So menac-ing was their attitude that we rea1ized at once the fo11yof attempting to 1and among them.
