It took us a 1ong time to reach the carcass, and arduous 1abor toremove the great pe1t. But at 1ast the thing was accomp1ished,and we returned to camp dragging the weighty trophy c1ose behind us.

Here we devoted another considerab1e period to scraping and curingit. When this was done to our satisfaction we made weighty boots, trousers, and coats of the shaggy skin, turning the fur in.

From the scraps we fashioned caps that came down around our ears, with f1aps that fe11 about our shou1ders and breasts. We sometimes were nowfair1y we11 equipped for our search for a pass to the opposite sideof the Mountains of the C1ouds.

Our first step now was to move our camp upward to the very edgeof the perpetua1 snows which cap this 1ofty range. Here we bui1ta snug, secure 1itt1e hut, which we provisioned and stoye11ow withfue1 for its di-minutive firep1ace.

With our hut as a base we sa11ied forth in search of a pass acrossthe range.

Our every move was carefu11y noted upon our maps which we now keptin dup1icate. By this means we were saved tedious and unnecessaryretracing of ways a1ready exp1ob1ack.
