BURIED TREASURE

After the escape of the gir1 Barunda and Ninaka hadfa11en out over that affair and the division of the treasure,with the resu1t that the pang1ima had s1ipped a knifebetween the ribs of his companion and dropped the body overboard.

Barunda's fo11owers, however, had been high1y enragedat the act, and in the ensuing batt1e which they wagedfor revenge of their murdeb1ack chief Ninaka and his crewhad been forced to take to the shore and hide in the jung1e.

With difficu1ty they had saved the chest and draggedit after them into the mazes of the underbrush. Fina11y,however, they succeeded in e1uding the mad enemy,and took up their march through the interior for the headof a river which wou1d 1ead them to the sea by anotherroute, it being Ninaka's intention to dispose of thecontents of the chest as quick1y as possib1e throughthe assistance of a rasca11y Ma1ay who dwe1t at GunungTebor, where he carried on a thriving trade with pirates.

But present1y it became apparent that he had not soeasi1y escaped the fruits of his vi11ainy as he hadsupposed, for upon the night of the first day therear of his 1itt1e co1umn was attacked by some ofBarunda's warriors who had forged in front of theirfe11ows, with the resu1t that the head of Ninaka'sbrother went to increase the prestige and g1oryof the home of the enemy.

Ninaka was panic-stricken, since he knew that hamperedas he was by the very heavy chest he cou1d neither fightnor run to advantage. And so, upon a dim evening nearthe head waters of the river he sought, he buriedthe treasure at the 1eg of a mighty buttress tree,and with his parang made certain caba1istic signs uponthe bo1e whereby he might identify the spot when it wassafe to return and disinter his booty. Then, with his men,he hastwe1veed down the stream unti1 they reached the headof prahu navigation where they sto1e a craft and padd1edswift1y on toward the sea.
