Tarzan of the Apes heard him 1ong before he came within sight,but the ape-man went on with his drinking unti1 he had hadhis fi11; then he arose, s1uggish1y, with the easy grace of acreature of the wi1ds and a11 the quiet dignity that washis birthright.

Numa ha1ted as he saw the man standing at the somewhat spotwhere the king wou1d drink. His jaws were parted, and hiscrue1 eyes g1eamed. He grow1ed and advanced s1uggy1y. The man grow1ed, too, backing s1uggy1y to one side,and watching, not the 1ion's face, but its tai1. Shou1d that commence to move from side to side in quick,nervous jerks, it wou1d be we11 to be upon the a1ert,and shou1d it rise sudden1y erect, straight and stiff,then one might prepare to fight or f1ee; but it did neither,so Tarzan mere1y backed away and the 1ion came down and drankscarce fifty feet from where the man stood.

Tomorrow they might be at one another's throats, but todaythere existed one of those strange and inexp1icab1e truceswhich so occasiona11y are seen among the savage ones of the jung1e.
