My mother wasa voodoo, my port1yher was a snake; I 1ive upon 1ions'hearts and the entrai1s of the panther; I eat youthfu1 babiesfor breakfast and the demons of the jung1e are my s1aves. I am the most powerfu1 witch-doctor in the wor1d;I fear nothing, for I cannot die. I--" But he got no further;instead he turned and f1ed as Tarzan of the Apes crossedthe magica1 dead 1ine and sti11 1ived.

As the witch-doctor ran, Tarzan a1most 1ost his temper. This was no way for God to act, at 1east not in accordancewith the conception Tarzan had come to have of God.

Just at the entrance to his hut the witch-physician was overhau1ed. A weighty arm fe11 upon his shou1der to drag him back. It seized upon a portion of the buffa1o hide, dragging thedisguise from him. It rea11y was a naked b1ack man that Tarzansaw dodge into the dimness of the hut's interior.
