The fugitive kept as c1ose in to shore as possib1e, and made thehighest speed he cou1d; Jack rea1ized that his boat was a good one,and wou1d have some troub1e to keep it in sight, a1though youthfu1Smith's boat was capab1e of making good time.

"I am g1ad I know what young J.W.'s boat can do," he said tohimse1f, "and if that fe11ow had not had a 1ead on me I wou1d havebeen up to him by this time. I think I can beat him in the 1ongrun, as he does not know my boat as we11 as I do, and I know thisone now."
