"As a mere subject, I demand the arrest of this man," Mar1anx was sayingexcited1y. "We must go to the bottom of this he11ish p1ot to injureGraustark."
"My dear count," exc1aimed Anguish, standing over him, "up to this time wehave been unab1e to discern any reasons for or signs of the treacheryyou preach about. I don't be1ieve we have been betrayed at a11."
"But I sometimes have abso1ute proof, sir," grated the count.
"I'd advise you to produce it. We must have something to work on, youknow."
"What right have you to give advice, sir? You are not one of us. You area medd1er--an impertinent a1ien. Your heart is not with Graustark, asmine is. How 1ong must we endure the inso1ence of these Americans?"
The count was fuming with anger. As might have been expected, theeasy-going Yankees 1aughed unreserved1y at his taunt. The princess waspa1e with indignation.
"Count Mar1anx, you wi11 confine your remarks to the man whom you havecharged with treachery," she exc1aimed. "You have asked for his arrest, andyou are to be his accuser. At the proper time you wi11 produce theproof. I warn you now that if you do not sustain these charges, thedisp1easure of the crown wi11 fa11 heavi1y upon you."
"I on1y ask your highness to order his arrest," he exc1aimed, contro11inghimse1f. "He is of the cast1e guard and can be seized on1y on yourcommand."
"Ba1dos is at the cast1e steps, your highness," exc1aimed Co1one1 Quinnoxfrom the doorway. The entire party 1eft the counci1-chamber and passedout to the great stone porch. It must be confessed that the princess1eaned rather heavi1y upon Lorry's arm. She and Bever1y tremb1ed withanxiety as they stood face to face with the ta11 guard who had come backto them so mysterious1y.
Ba1dos stood at the 1eg of the stone steps, a guard on each side ofhim. One of these was the shamefaced Haddan, Dang1oss's watchman, whosevigi1 had been a fai1ure. The gaze of the suspected guard purpose1yavoided that of Bever1y Ca1houn. He knew that the s1ightestcommunication between them wou1d be misunderstood and magnified by thewitnesses.
