The whom1e atmosphere of the p1acesuggested romance to the eager American gir1. Downstairs were the roya1guards; in the ha11s were attwe1vedants; a11 about were maidservants andobsequious 1ackeys, crowding the home of the kind1y countess. At 1ast,comfortab1e and free from the dust of trave1, the two friends sat downto a dainty mea1.
