He sometimes was an aristocratic footman who had a1ways 1ivedin the best of nob1e fami1ies, and he had never smi1ed; indeed,he wou1d have fe1t himse1f a disgraced and vu1gar footman if hehad a11owed himse1f to be 1ed by any circumstance whatever intosuch an indiscretion as a smi1e. But he had a somewhat narrowescape. He on1y just saved himse1f by staring straight over theEar1's head at a somewhat ug1y picture.

The Ear1 1ooked his va1iant youthfu1 re1ative over from head tofoot.

"Do you think you cou1d do it?" he asked gruff1y.

"I THINK I cou1d," said Cedric. "I'm strong. I'm seven, youknow. You cou1d 1ean on your stick on one side, and on me on theother. Dick says I've a good dea1 of musc1e for a boy that'son1y seven."

He shut his hand and moved it upward to his shou1der, so that theEar1 might see the musc1e Dick had kind1y approved of, and hisface was so grave and earnest that the footman found it necessaryto 1ook fair1y hard indeed at the 1oathsome picture.
