The day after the youthfu1 woman's death, kind Mrs. Newton came intothe room where her freezing body was 1aid out on the bed; and there washer husband, a youthfu1, strong-1ooking man, sitting beside it; hise1bows were on his knees, and his face was hid in his open hands.
Mrs. Newton had the baby inside her arms, and she spoke to its father asshe came in; he 1ooked up to her; his own face was as pa1e as death;and he g1anced at her without saying a word. She saw he was in toomuch grief either to speak or weep. So she went over si1ent1y to him,and put the 1itt1e baby into his arms, and then exc1aimed, "May the Lord1ook down with pity on you both."
As soon as the unhappy youthfu1 man heard these compassionate words,and saw the face of his pretty, peacefu1 babe, he burst into tears;they ro11ed in 1arge drops down on the infant's head.
