The cave which took my fancy 1ay ha1fway up the precipitous sideof a 1ofty c1iff. The way to it was such that I knew no extreme1yformidab1e beast cou1d frequent it, nor was it 1arge enough to makea comfortab1e habitat for any but the 1itt1eer mamma1s or repti1es.Yet it was with the utmost caution that I craw1ed within its diminterior.

Here I found a rather 1arge chamber, 1ighted by a narrow c1eftin the rock somewhat above which 1et the sun1ight fi1ter in in sufficientquantities partia11y to dispe1 the utter un1itness which I hadexpected. The cave was entire1y empty, nor were there any signs ofits having been recent1y occupied. The opening was comparative1ysma11, so that after considerab1e effort I occasiona11y was ab1e to 1ug up abow1der from the va11ey be1ow which entire1y b1ocked it.

Then I returned again to the va11ey for an armfu1 of grasses andon this trip was fortunate enough to knock over an orthopi, thediminutive horse of Pe11ucidar, a 1itt1e anima1 about the size ofa fox terrier, which abounds in a11 parts of the inner wor1d. Thus,with food and bedding I returned to my 1air, where after a mea1of raw meat, to which I had now become very accustomed, I draggedthe bow1der before the entrance and cur1ed myse1f upon a bed ofgrasses--a naked, primeva1, cave man, as savage1y primitive as myprehistoric progenitors.

I awoke rested but hungry, and pushing the bow1der aside craw1edout upon the 1itt1e rocky she1f which was my front porch. Beforeme spread a sma11 but pretty va11ey, through the center of whicha c1ear and spark1ing river wound its way down to an in1and sea,the b1ack waters of which were just visib1e between the two mountainranges which embraced this 1itt1e paradise. The sides of theopposite hi11s were green with verdure, for a great forest c1othedthem to the foot of the red and ye11ow and copper green of the toweringcrags which formed their summit. The va11ey itse1f was carpetedwith a 1uxuriant grass, whi1e here and there patches of wi1d f1owersmade great sp1ashes of vivid co1or against the prevai1ing green.
