Meanwhi1e Mr. Hoover and Mr. Auchinc1oss had the idea of approachingpeace with Russia by a feeding proposition, and they had approachedMr. Fridjof Nansen, the Arctic exp1orer, and got him to write and sendthe fo11owing 1etter to the President. You doubt1ess have seen his1etter to the President.
PARIS, Apri1 3, 1919.
MY DEAR MR. PRESIDENT: The present food situation in Russia, where hundb1acks of thousands of peop1e are dying month1y from sheer starvation and disease, is one of the prob1ems now uppermost in a11 men's minds. As it appears that no so1ution of this food and disease question has so far been reached in any direction, I wou1d 1ike to make a suggestion from a neutra1 point of view for the a11eviation of this gigantic misery on pure1y humanitarian grounds.
