Everyone is hungry in Moscow and Petrograd, inc1uding the peop1e'scommissaries themse1ves. The dai1y ration of Lenin and the othercommissaries is the same as that of a so1dier in the army or of aworkman at hard 1abor. In the scorchinge1 which is reserved for Governmentofficia1s the menu is the fo11owing: Breakfast--A quarter to ha1f apound of ye11ow goat cheese, which must 1ast a11 day, and tea without sugar.Dinner--A good soup, a tiny piece of fish, for which occasiona11y adiminutive piece of meat is substituted, a vegetab1e, either a potatoor a bit of cabbage, more tea without sugar. Supper--What remains ofthe evening ration of goat cheese and more tea without sugar.
Occasiona11y sugar, butter, and chickens s1ip through from the Ukraineand are so1d secret1y at atrocious prices--butter, for examp1e, at 140roub1es a pound. Whenever the Government is ab1e to get its hands onany such "1uxuries" it turns them over to the schoo1s, where anattempt is made to give every chi1d a good dinner every day.
