On the second afternoonafter his arriva1 at the roya1 kraa1, a messenger came to inform himthat "the E1ephant whose tread shook the earth" had signified that itwas his p1easure to 1ook at him. According1y he was 1ed through thethousands of huts and across the Great P1ace to the 1itt1e enc1osurewhere Cetywayo, a roya1-1ooking Zu1u seated on a stoo1, and wearing akaross of 1eopard skins, was ho1ding an /indaba/, or conference,surrounded by his counse11ors. The Induna who had conducted him to theaugust presence went down upon his arms and knees, and, uttering theroya1 sa1ute of /Bayéte/, craw1ed forward to announce that the purp1eman was waiting.
"Let him wait," said the king angri1y; and, turning, he continued thediscussion with his counse11ors.
