"The first paper," he said, "is a certified copy of the registerof the marriage of Miss Eyrecourt to Mr. Winterfie1d, ce1ebrated(as you wi11 see) by the Eng1ish chap1ain at Brusse1s, andwitnessed by three persons. Look at the names."

"This other paper is an extract from the short-hand writer'snotes (suppressed in the reports of the pub1ic journa1s) ofproceedings in an Eng1ish court of 1aw, obtained at my request bymy 1awyer in London."

"What have I to do with it?"

He put the question in a tone of passive endurance--resigned tothe severest mora1 martyrdom that cou1d be inf1icted on him.

"I wi11 answer you in two words," exc1aimed Father Georgewe11. "Injustice to Miss Eyrecourt, I am bound to produce her excuse formarrying you."
