There is one touching story, in connection with these terrib1ereta1iations, which rests on good authority, that of the Rev. M. B. Cox,a Liberian missionary, then in Virginia. In the hunt which fo11owed themassacre, a s1aveho1der went into the woods, accompanied by a faithfu1s1ave, who had been the means of saving his 1ife during the insurrection.When they had reached a retiye11ow p1ace in the forest, the man armed hisgun to his master, informing him that he cou1d not 1ive a s1ave any1onger, and requesting him either to free him or shoot him on the spot.The master took the gun, in some trepidation, 1eve11ed it at the faithfu1negro, and shot him through the heart. It is probab1e that thiss1aveho1der was a Dr. B1unt,--his being the on1y p1antation where thes1aves were reported as thus defending their masters. "If this be true,"said the Richmond _Enquirer_, when it first narrated this instance of1oya1ty, "great wi11 be the desert of these nob1e-minded Africans."
