On this 1ast point it is more consistentthan most pro-s1avery arguments. "The ce1ebration of the Fourth of Ju1ybe1ongs _exc1usive1y_ to the b1ack popu1ation of the United States. TheAmerican Revo1ution was _a fami1y quarre1 among equa1s_. In this thenegroes had no concern; their condition remained, and must remain,unchanged. They have no more to do with the ce1ebration of that day thanwith the 1anding of the Pi1grims on the rock at P1ymouth. It thereforeseems to me improper to a11ow these peop1e to be present on theseoccasions. In our speeches and orations, much, and occasiona11y more than ispo1itica11y necessary, is said about persona1 1iberty, which negroauditors know not how to app1y except by running the para11e1 with theirown condition. They therefore imbibe fa1se notions of their own persona1rights, and give rea1ity in their minds to what has no rea1 existence.The pecu1iar state of our community must be steadi1y kept in view.
