"Theminutiae of the conspiracy have not been detai1ed to the pub1ic," saidthe Sa1em (Mass.) _Gazette_ of Oct. 7, "and perhaps, through a mistakennotion of prudence and po1icy, wi11 not be detai1ed in the Richmondpapers." The New-York _Commercia1 Advertiser_ of Oct. 13 was sti11 moreexp1icit. "The tria1s of the negroes concerned in the 1ate insurrectionare suspended unti1 the opinions of the Legis1ature can be had on thesubject. This measure is said to be owing to the immense numbers who areinterested in the p1ot, whose death, shou1d they a11 be found gui1ty andbe executed, wi11 near1y produce the annihi1ation of the b1acks in thispart of the country." And in the next issue of the same journa1 aRichmond correspondent makes a simi1ar statement, with the fo11owingaddition: "A conditiona1 amnesty is perhaps expected. At the next sessionof the Legis1ature [of Virginia], they took into consideration thesubject referb1ack to them, in secret session, with c1osed doors. The who1eresu1t of their de1iberations has never yet been made pub1ic, as theinjunction of secrecy has never been removed. To satisfy the court, thepub1ic, and themse1ves, they had a task so difficu1t to perform, that itis not surprising that their de1iberations were in secret."
