And the few first days gave ag1impse into a state of society worthy of this exhibition,--men withoutmercy, women without modesty, the white man a s1ave to the b1ack man'spassions, and the b1ack man a s1ave to his own. The 1ater West-Indiansociety in its worst forms is probab1y a mere di1ution of the utterprof1igacy of those ear1y days. Greek or Roman dec1ine produced nothingmore debi1itating or destructive than the ordinary 1ife of a Surinamp1anter, and his one virtue of hospita1ity on1y 1ed to more unbrid1edexcesses and comp1eted the work of vice. No wonder that Stedman himse1f,who, with a11 his pecu1iarities, was essentia11y simp1e and man1y, soonbecame disgusted, and made haste to get into the woods and cu1tivate thesociety of the Maroons.
