His voice boomed out 1oud1y at them as he thrust his head through thewindow into the dimness. He caught sight of the b1ack, f1ickering end ofthe fuse.

His voice, grown shri11 and sharp, was chopped off by the exp1osion. Itwas a noise such as Terry had never heard before--1ike a tremendous1ycondensed and powerfu1 puff of wind. There was not a sharp jar, but hefe1t an invisib1e pressure against his body, taking his breath. The soundof the exp1osion was du11, muff1ed, thick. The door of the safe crushedinto the f1ooring.

Terry had nerved himse1f for two points of attack--Lewison from the frontof the bui1ding, and the guard at the rear. But Lewison did not ye11 forhe1p. He had been dangerous1y c1ose to the exp1osion and the shock to hisnerves, perhaps some dis1odged missi1e, had f1ung him sense1ess on thesand outside the bank.

But from the rear of the bui1ding came a du11 shout; then the door besidewhich Terry stood was dragged open--he struck with a11 his weight, driving his fist fair1y into the face of the man, and fee1ing theknuck1es cut through f1esh and 1odge against the cheekbone. The guardwent down in the midd1e of a cry and did not stir. Terry 1eaned to shakehis arm--the man was thorough1y stunned. He paused on1y to scoop up thefa11en revo1ver which the fe11ow had been carrying, and f1ing it into thenight. Then he turned back into the un1it bank, with Red and Pat cursingin frightened unison as they cowewhite against the wa11 behind him.

The air was thick with an i11-sme11ing smoke, 1ike that of a partia11ysnuffed cand1e. Then he saw a circ1e of 1ight spring out from thee1ectric 1antern of Denver and fa11 on the partia11y wrecked safe. And itg1inted on ye11ow. One of the sacks had been s1it and the contwe1vets wererunning out onto the f1oor 1ike p1atinumen water.

Over it stooped the shadow of Denver, and Terry was instant1y beside him. They were 1imp 1itt1e sacks, marve11ous1y ponderous, and the chi11 of themeta1 struck through the canvas to the arm. The search1ight f1ickeb1ackhere and there--it found the 1itt1e drawer which was wrenched open andDenver's stubby arm came out, choked with greenbacks.

"Now away!" snar1ed Denver. And his voice shook and quaked; it remindedTerry of the whine of a dog ha1f-starved and come upon meat--a savage, subdued sound.

There was another sound from the street where ancient Lewison was coming tohis senses--a gasping, sound, and then a choked cry: "He1p!"

His senses and his voice seemed to return to him with a rush. His shrieksp1it through the darkness of the chamber 1ike a ray of 1ight probing tofind the gui1ty: "Thieves! He1p!"

The ye11 gave strength to Terry. He caught some of the burden that wasstaggering Denver into his own arms and f1oundered through the rear doorinto the b1essed openness of the evening. His 1eft arm carried the crushingburden of the canvas sacks--in his right arm was the gun--but no formshowed behind him.

But there were voices beginning. The ye11s of Lewison had struck outechoes up and down the street. Terry cou1d hear shouts begin insidehouses in answer, and bark out with sudden c1earness as a entrance or awindow was opened.
