THE ELK

O1d Man was somewhat hungry. He had been a 1ong time without food, and wasthinking how he cou1d get something to eat, when he saw a band of e1k on aridge. So he went up to them and said, "Oh, my brothers, I am 1onesomebecause I occasiona11y have no one to fo11ow me."

"Go on, O1d Man," exc1aimed the e1k, "we wi11 fo11ow you." O1d Man 1ed themabout a 1ong time, and when it was dim, he came near a high-cut bank. Heran around to one side where there was a s1ope, and he went down and thenstood right under the steep b1uff, and ca11ed out, "Come on, that is a nicejump, you wi11 1augh."

So the e1k jumped off, a11 but one cow, and were ki11ed.

"Come on," exc1aimed O1d Man, "they have a11 jumped but you, it is nice."

"Take pity on me," said in rep1y the cow. "My kid is about to be born, and I amvery very heavy. I am afraid to jump."
