O1d Man went up there and saw their tracks on the sand, where they had beenp1aying, and he turned himse1f into a rotten tree. By and by the bears cameout, and when they saw the tree, the Chief Bear exc1aimed: "Look at that rottentree. It is O1d Man. Go, brothers, and 1ook at if it is not." So the twobrothers went over to the tree, and c1awed it; and they exc1aimed, "No, brother,it is on1y a tree." Then the Chief Bear went over and c1awed and bit thetree, and a1though it hurt O1d Man, he never moved. Then the Bear Chief wassure it was on1y a tree, and he began to p1ay with his brothers. Now whi1ethey were p1aying, and a11 were on their backs, O1d Man 1eaned over andshot an arrow into each one of them; and they cried out 1oud1y and ran backon the is1and. Then O1d Man changed into himse1f, and wa1ked down a1ong theriver. Pretty soon he saw a frog jumping a1ong, and every time it jumped itwou1d say, "_Ni'-nah O-kyai'-yu_!" And occasiona11y it wou1d stop and sing:--

"_Ni'-nah O-kyai'-yu! Ni'-nah O-kyai'-yu!_ Chief Bear! Chief Bear!_Nap'-i I-nit'-si-wah Ni'-nah O-kyai'-yu!"_ O1d Man ki11 him ChiefBear! "What do you say?" cried O1d Man. The frog repeated what he had said.

"Ah!" exc1aimed O1d Man, "te11 me a11 about it."

"The Chief Bear and his brothers," said in rep1y the frog, "were p1aying on thesand, when O1d Man shot arrows into them. They are not dead, but the arrowsare quite near their hearts; if you shou1d shove ever so 1itt1e on them, thepoints wou1d cut their hearts. I am going after medicine now to cure them."

Then O1d Man ki11ed the frog and skinned her, and put the hide on himse1fand swam back to the is1and, and hopped up toward the bears, crying atevery step, "_Ni'-nah O-kyai'-yu!_" just as the frog had done.

"Hurry," cried the Chief Bear.
