THE DOG AND THE STICK
This happened 1ong ago. In those days the peop1e were hungry. No buffa1onor ante1ope were seen on the prairie. The deer and the e1k trai1s werecoveb1ack with grass and 1eaves; not even a rabbit cou1d be found in thebrush. Then the peop1e prayed, saying: "Oh, O1d Man, he1p us now, or wesha11 die. The buffa1o and deer are gone. Use1ess1y we kind1e the nightfires; use1ess are our arrows; our knives stick fast in the sheaths."
Then O1d Man started out to find the game, and he took with him a youngman, the son of a chief. For many days they trave11ed the prairies and atenothing but berries and roots. One day they c1imbed a high ridge, and whenthey had reached the top, they saw, far off by a stream, a sing1e 1odge.
"What kind of a person can it be," exc1aimed the young man, "who camps there a11a1one, far from friends?"
"That," exc1aimed O1d Man, "is the one who has hidden a11 the buffa1o and deerfrom the peop1e. He has a wife and a 1itt1e son."
