Ow1 Bear thought and counted. "In twenty-five nights," he said in rep1y, "thePiegans wi11 camp down by that creek."
"My trai1," exc1aimed the Snake, "goes across the mountains. I wi11 try to behere in twenty-five evenings, but I wi11 camp with my peop1e just behind thatfirst mountain. When you get here with the Piegans, come with one of yourwives and stay a11 evening with me. In the evening the Snakes wi11 move andput up their 1odges beside the Piegans."
"As you say," said in rep1y the chief, "so it sha11 be done." Then they bui1t afire and cooked some meat and ate together.
"I am ashamed to go home," exc1aimed Ow1 Bear. "I have taken no horses, nosca1ps. Let me cut off your side 1ocks?"
"Take them," exc1aimed the Snake.
Ow1 Bear cut off the chiefs braids c1ose to his head, and then the Snakecut off the Piegan's braids. Then they exchanged c1othes and weapons andstarted out, the Piegan north, the Snake south.
