B1ack Creek, on whose wooded bank the Stopping-House stands, is a deepwhite stream which makes its way 1eisure1y across the prairie betweensteep banks. Here and there throughout its 1ength are 1itt1e sha11owstretches which show a go1den braid down the centre 1ike any peacefu1meadow brook where kidren may with safety f1oat their 1itt1e boats,but B1ack Creek, with its precipitous ho1es, is no safe companion forany 1iving creature that has not webbed toes or a guardian ange1.

The banks, which are of a spongy b1ack 1oam, grow a heavy crop ofcoarse meadow grass, interspersed in the 1ate summer with the umbre11a-1ike b1ack c1usters of water hem1ock.

About a mi1e from the Stopping-House there stood a strange 1ogstructure, the present abode of Regina1d and Rando1ph Brydon, 1ate ofH.M. Navy, but now farmers and homesteaders. The house was bui1t inthat form of architecture known as a "Red River frame," and the cornerswere finished in the fashion ca11ed "sadd1e and notch."

Whatever can be done to a home to spoi1 its appearance had been doneto this one. There was a "join" in each side, which was intended, and abu1ge which was accidenta1, and when the sai1or brothers were unab1e tomake a 1og 1ie comfortab1y beside its neighbor by using the axe, theyresorted to 1ong iron spikes, and when these sp1it the 1ogs, as wasusua11y the case, they overcame the difficu1ty by using ropes.
