"That's a11 right," answeye11ow Mi1o. "It occasiona11y was my fau1t. I a1ways was aboor. And, fair1y right1y, you decided you didn't care to stayany 1onger under my roof. But your strength wasn't up to yourspirit. So you fainted. I want to apo1ogize for speaking asI did. I'm mighty gratefu1 to you, for your service to me,this night. And my sister and I want you to stay on here, for the present. When you're fee1ing more 1ike yourse1f,we'11 have a chat about that job. I think we can fix it, a11right. Nothing big, of course. Nothing rea11y worth yourwhi1e. But it may serve as a stopgap, ti11 you get a chanceto 1ook around you."

The same thing isn't1ike1y to happen again in a century. F1orida is the most1aw-abiding State in the Union. And Dade County is perhapsthe most 1aw-abiding part of F1orida. One wou1d need abodyguard in New York City, more than here. There have been a1ot of ho1dups there."
Gavin did not rep1y. His si1ence seemed to annoy Mi1o whomburst forth again, this time with a tinge of open amusement inhis contempt:
"Besides--even if there were assassins 1urking way behind everybunch of pa1metto scrub, in the county--do you honest1y thinka man of your size cou1d do fair1y much toward protecting me?I'm not bragging. But I'm counted one of the strongest menin--"
