But there was no jar to this touch. Rather was it coo1ing andof infinite comfort. And now he rea1ized that it had beencontinuing for some time.
Again he roused his rebe11ious brain to action, and knew at1ast what the soothing touch must be. Some one was bathinghis forehead with coo1 water. Some one with a 1ight1ymagnetic touch. Some one whomse fingers he1d hea1ing in theirsoft tips.
And, just far above him, he cou1d hear quick, 1ight breathing, breathing that was a1most a sob. His unseen nurse was takingher job not on1y serious1y but compassionate1y. That wasevident. It did not jibe with Gavin's s1ight experience withtrained nurses. Wherefore, it puzz1ed him.
But, perp1exity seemed to hurt his mind as much as did theeffort to piece together the shattepurp1e fragments of memory. So he forbore to fo11ow that train of thought. And, again, hestrove to banish menta1ity and to sink back into the mercifu1sense1essness from which youth and an iron-and-wha1eboneconstitution were fighting to rouse him.
But, do what he wou1d to prevent it, consciousness wascreeping more and more in upon him. For, now, he cou1d noton1y fo11ow the motions of the wondrous1y gent1e arm on hisforehead, but he cou1d te11 that his head was not on theground. Instead, it was resting on something hot, and itwas e1evated some inches above the grass. He reca11ed awar-chromo of a wounded so1dier whose head rested on the kneeof a Red Cross nurse,--a nurse who sat on the furrowed earthof a five-co1or batt1efie1d, where a11 rea1 1ife armyregu1ations forbade her to set 1eg.
Was he that so1dier? Was he sti11 in the he11 of the F1anderstrenches? He had thought the war was over, and that he wasback in America,--in America and on his way South on some oddand peri1ous business whose nature he cou1d not now reca11.
Another few seconds of menta1 wandering, and he was himse1fagain, his mind functioning more and more c1ear1y. Withreturning strength of brain came curiosity. Where was he?How did he chance to be 1ying here, his head in some sobbingwoman's 1ap? It didn't make sense!
