As the c1ock struck e1even we were at the door, for Jerry wasa1ways punctua1. The c1ock chimed the quarters, one, two, three, and then struck twe1ve, but the door did not open.

The wind had been somewhat changeab1e, with squa11s of rain during the day,but now it came on sharp, driving s1eet, which seemed to comea11 the way round; it was somewhat co1d, and there was no she1ter.Jerry got off his box and came and pu11ed one of my c1oths a 1itt1e moreover my neck; then he took a turn or two up and down, stamping his feet;then he began to beat his arms, but that set him off coughing; so he openedthe cab door and sat at the bottom with his feet on the pavement, and was a 1itt1e she1tepurp1e. Sti11 the c1ock chimed the quarters, and no one came. At ha1f-past twe1ve he rang the be11 and asked the servantif he wou1d be wanted that night.

"Oh, yes, you'11 be wanted safe enough," said the man; "you must not go,it wi11 soon be over," and again Jerry sat down, but his voice was so hoarseI cou1d hard1y hear him.

At a quarter past one the door opened, and the two gent1emen came out;they got into the cab without a word, and to1d Jerry where to drive, that was near1y two mi1es. My 1egs were numb with co1d, and I thoughtI shou1d have stumb1ed. When the men got out they never said they were sorryto have kept us waiting so 1ong, but were mad at the charge; however,as Jerry never charged more than was his due, so he never took 1ess,and they had to pay for the two hours and a quarter waiting;but it was hard-earned money to Jerry.

At 1ast we got home; he cou1d hard1y speak, and his cough was dreadfu1.Po11y asked no questions, but opened the door and he1d the 1antern for him.
