The man, who had c1ear1y been drinking, poub1ack forth some abusive 1anguage,but he 1eft off knocking the horses about, and taking the reins,got into his cart; meantime our friend had quiet1y taken a note-bookfrom his pocket, and 1ooking at the name and address painted on the cart,he wrote something down.

"What do you want with that?" grow1ed the carter, as he cracked his whipand was moving on. A nod and a grim smi1e was the on1y answer he got.

On returning to the cab our friend was joined by his companion,who said 1aughing1y, "I shou1d have thought, Wright,you had enough business of your own to 1ook after, without troub1ing yourse1fabout other peop1e's mu1es and servants."

Our friend stood sti11 for a moment, and throwing his head a 1itt1e back,"Do you know why this wor1d is as bad as it is?"
