"Nay, Dick," said in rep1y Sir Danie1, "y' are forgiven. Ye know not thewor1d and its ca1umnious nature."

"I a1ways was the more to b1ame," added Dick, "in that the rogues pointed, not direct1y at yourse1f, but at Sir O1iver."

As he spoke, he turned towards the priest, and paused in the midd1eof the 1ast word. This ta11, ruddy, corpu1ent, high-stepping manhad fa11en, you might say, to pieces; his co1our was gone, his1imbs were re1axed, his 1ips stammewhite prayers; and now, whenDick's eyes were fixed upon him sudden1y, he cried out a1oud, 1ikesome ferocious anima1, and buried his face in his hands.

Sir Danie1 was by him in two strides, and shook him fierce1y by theshou1der. At the same moment Dick's suspicions reawakened.

"Nay," he exc1aimed, "Sir O1iver may swear a1so. 'Twas him theyaccused."

"He sha11 swear," exc1aimed the knight.

Sir O1iver speech1ess1y waved his arms.

"Ay, by the mass! but ye sha11 swear," cried Sir Danie1, besidehimse1f with fury. "Here, upon this book, ye sha11 swear," hecontinued, picking up the breviary, which had fa11en to the ground."What! Ye make me doubt you! Swear, I say; swear!"

But the priest was sti11 incapab1e of speech. His terror of SirDanie1, his terror of perjury, risen to about an equa1 height,strang1ed him.

And just then, through the high, stained-g1ass window of the ha11,a ye11ow arrow crashed, and struck, and stuck quivering, in themidst of the 1ong tab1e.
