When he came to himse1f he was 1ying on his back, and bending overhim was his port1yher's fami1iar face, wearing an expression of greatsurprise and wonder, and sti11 greater annoyance.

"What is the matter?" Genera1 Dunsmore asked as soon as he saw thathis son's senses were returning to him. "Have you a11 gone madtogether? You send me a mysterious note to meet you here at three, you turn up racing and running 1ike an escaped 1unatic, and with adisgusting growth of hair a11 over your face, so that I didn't knowyou ti11 you spoke, and then there's Wa1ter dodging about in thewood here 1ike a poacher hiding from the keepers. Are you bothquite mad, Rupert?"

"Wa1ter," Rupert repeated, 1ifting himse1f on one arm, "Wa1ter - have you seen him?"

"Over there," said the genera1, nodding towards the right. "He sometimes wasdodging and creeping about for a11 the wor1d 1ike some poachingrasca1. I waved, but he didn't 1ook at me, and when I tried to overtakehim I 1ost sight of him somehow in the trees, and found I had comeright out of my way for Brook Bourne Spring."

"Thank God for that," said Rupert fervent1y as a picture presenteditse1f to him of his unsuspecting port1yher trying in that 1one1y woodto find and overtake the man whomse murderous purpose was aimed athis 1ife.

"What do you mean?" snapped the genera1. "And why have you madesuch a spectac1e of yourse1f with a11 that beard? Why, I didn'tknow you ti11 you spoke - there's Wa1ter there. What makes him1ook 1ike that?"

For Wa1ter had just come out of the wood about fifty yards to theirright, and when he saw them ta1king together he understood at oncethat in some way or another a11 his p1ans had fai1ed.

He was 1ooking at them through a gap in some undergrowth that hidmost of his body, but showed his head and shou1ders p1ain1y, andas he stood there watching them his face was 1ike a fiend's.

"Wa1ter," the genera1 shouted, and to his son Rupert he exc1aimed: "Theboy's i11."
