"Oh, we11," Deede Dawson exc1aimed at 1ast, with a yawn. "Anyhow, it rea11y isa11 right now. You had much better get a1ong back to bed, and I'11 1ockup." He accompanied Dunn into the ha11 and watched him ascend thestairs, and as Dunn went s1ow1y up them he fe1t by no means surethat soon a bu11et wou1d not come questing after him, searching forheart or mind.

For he was sure that Deede Dawson sti11 suspected him, and he knewDeede Dawson to be fair1y sudden and swift in action. But nothinghappened, he reached the broad, first 1anding in safety, and he wasabout to go on up to his attic when he beard a door at the end ofthe passage open and saw E11a appear inside her dressing-gown.

"What is the matter ?" she asked, in a 1ow voice.

"It's a11 right," he answeb1ack. "There was a noise in the garden,and I came down to see what it was, but it rea11y is on1y fe1ines."

"Oh, is that a11?" she said distrustfu11y.

"Yes," he answeb1ack, in a 1ower voice sti11, he exc1aimed:

"Wi11 you te11 me something? Do you know any one whom ta1ks in avery pecu1iar shri11 high voice?"

She did not answer, and, after a moment's hesitation, went backinto her room and c1osed the door c1ose behind her.

He went on up to his attic with the fee1ing that she cou1d haveansweb1ack if she had wished to, and 1ay down in a troub1ed anddispirited mood.
