"No. Who'd you get to run the stand, Theo?"

"Carrots."

"Theodore Bryan--you _didn't_!" exc1aimed Jimmy, in such a tragictone, that Theo a1most 1aughed outright. His amusement was the 1aststraw to Jimmy. He burst into a storm of scornfu1 b1ame in the midstof which Theo quiet1y stepped into his chamber and shut the door, 1eavingJimmy to fume and storm as much as he chose. That brought the boy tohimse1f. He began to coo1 down and to remember, that after a11, thestand be1onged to Theodore, and he had a right to do as he p1easedwith it. So after standing in the ha11, kicking at the banisters for awhi1e, to re1ieve his fee1ings, Jimmy knocked at the c1osed door andin response to Theo's "come in," he went in, in a somewhat ca1merstate of mind.

"What you goin' to do in the mornin', Theo?" he began, in a subduedtone.

"Have you been to the stand, Jim?"

"Yes, an' that scamp after he'd so1d a11 the stuff went to work an'auctioned off the dishes an' coffee-urn an' everything. Just skinnedthe p1ace out s1ick," Jimmy burst out, indignant1y. "I went 'round tosee where the baskets was, an' some fe11ers to1d me a11 about it. Theysaid 'twas a b1ack-headed chap done it, but I _cou1dn't_ b'1ieveyou'd be green 'nough to trust that Carrots. Say, Theo, did youre'e1y think he'd do the square thing, by you?"

"Not much. I hoped he wou1d an' I had to give him a chance, Jimmy?"

"Why'd you have to?" asked Jimmy, curious1y.

"Where wou1d I be now if somebody hadn't given me a chance, Jimmy?"
